đđż Welcome Back!
Hello BMP Network! Time is flying - we have now completed two months of the new year, and March is just around the corner! We hope youâve had an insightful start to the year that has been full of reflection and that these next few months are productive and meaningful for you.
Many of the newsletter readers are not members of the network! If you would like to join our exclusive group chats where you can network with other Black medical students from the UK, feel free to sign up using this link!
đĄTheme of the Month - Discipline
With a new year comes new additions to the BMP Newsletter! Our new section of the newsletter will be centred around key themes of the month. Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Discipline is a trait that many of us are familiar with, but many struggle to embody. Some describe it as âfuture gain over present painâ or the common âno pain, no gainâ. With all these ways of putting it, there seems to be an underlying connection - it involves an element of discomfort for growth.
Now, weâve spoken about adaptability in our last issue. We know that we can be reluctant to leave our old methods and ways of working. But, ultimately, doing so can reap rewards - be it personal development or stellar exam results.Â
Discipline can manifest itself in Medicine and our studies in many ways: waking up and getting ready in time for that surgical meeting at 7 in the morning or staying an extra hour in your placement to desperately get your sign-offs complete!
We are faced with decisions or scenarios that require self-discipline instead of standard motivation so that we can become the best doctors we can be.
Ultimately, discipline does not come out of the blue and is usually born through effective habits and systems in place. Our founder, Sharon, spoke about this in the December Issue, where she said we should âfocus on building healthy habits to help us operate to our fullest potential and purposeâ.
The same goes for incorporating self-discipline into our lives - if we create healthy systems that allow us to be consistent and push ourselves (within reason), these things become habits and a part of our lifestyle.
đ Content Highlights
In typical BMP fashion, we did our Valentineâs Editon content. This time we looked into a case that touched on âBroken Heart Syndromeâ. Watch our short examination video on how to perform a cardiovascular examination!
We interacted with the network by doing an Instagram Live (hosted by our social media manager, Liam) on our own stories from clinical placement. It was a great live full of laughs, learning and reflection. Check it out now on our page!
